Registrations open for the 2026 UAA Indigenous Talent Identification Day

The SWSAS Indigenous program is delivered in partnership with Underwriting Agencies Australia and the Regional Academies of Sport (RAS) network.

The SWSAS and UAA Indigenous Talent ID event provides a sporting platform for athletes aged 12–18 to be identified and, where suitable and possible, considered for selection into one of the SWSAS sports programs or other sports aligned with their interests. Athletes identified through this event may be offered the opportunity to progress into fully funded scholarship positions within the SWSAS Programs, or receive support as they pursue a new sporting pathway.

Program Partners

Talent ID is designed to identify people with specific skills, personal qualities and physical attributes that may lead that person to become a high-performing athlete. It is much more than just assessing a person’s physical capabilities, it includes the emotional side of performance, aspects like; desire, determination, resilience and so forth. These qualities are found in elite performance athletes.

Who: Secondary-School aged Male and Female Indigenous, First Nation, Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Athletes from the South West Sydney Academy of Sport Catchment areas, who live, attend school in or play sport in Camden, Campbelltown, Liverpool or Wollondilly, the traditional land of the Dharawal people.

What: Sport Talent Identification Day.

Cost: There is no cost to attend this day for Indigenous students. Participation includes Lunch and an Indigenous-themed performance shirt, incorporating designs from Academy Indigenous Athletes

How to be involved: Speak to your school sports teacher or school Indigenous Liaison Officer and ask them complete this form with you. 

How the Event Works

Students will be introduced to a range of sports and will participate in multiple skill‑based sessions designed to create a fun, supportive environment for showcasing their abilities.

The event also includes a physical assessment delivered by the WSU Sport Science Unit, featuring strength and conditioning evaluations, fitness testing, and additional opportunities for students to demonstrate their commitment to progressing along the talent development pathway.

All coaches involved are highly qualified and experienced in talent identification and pathway development.

Talent‑Identified Students

Athletes who demonstrate strong athletic ability and potential for participation in the Academy’s State‑endorsed pathway programs may be selected for the SWSAS Indigenous Future Stars Squad.

Selected Athletes

Athletes chosen for the squad will receive scholarship funding and performance support, including personal development, education, and strength & conditioning services provided through our high‑performance partners.

What to Expect:
Foundational Movement Skill and Talent Identification

  • Multiple group and individual sporting skill assessment across a varied number of traditional sports including drill and match-play opportunities, and/or
  • Introduction and identification of foundational movement skills through participation in traditional First Nation and Indigenous Games
    • Focus on key skills including;
      • passing / throwing 
      • catching
      • evasion / change of direction
      • agility
      • speed / change of pace
      • tactical concepts in offence and defence


Athletes do not have to be playing competitive sport, nor be proficient in the sports above
 to be able to come along and participate.

Athletes should attend in their school sports uniform.

Athletes will then be given an Academy Indigenous Day T-Shirt to wear throughout the event, which they get to keep following the day.

Lunch will be provided by the Academy.

What Happens After the Day?

Following on from the Indigenous Talent Identification Day, a number of athletes will be invited to participate within the Indigenous Athlete Talent Program, and/or to nominate for a position within an Academy Sport Squad Program. These invitations are usually sent to the athlete and school liaison officer prior to the end of Term 3.

The Indigenous Athlete Talent Program will feature supervised strength and conditioning, general sport skills, and sport education sessions held during primarily during Term 4*, that will assist athletes to develop core individual skills such as passing, catching, speed, agility and change of direction within a squad training environment.

*Additional sessions may take place during the end of year school holidays through January and February

To be eligible to apply for the Indigenous Talent ID event, applicants must first identify as being of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. Proof of descent may be requested.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • The program is open to male and female athletes aged 12–18 years.
  • Applicants must currently reside within one of the following Local Government Areas (LGAs):
    Campbelltown, Camden, Liverpool or Wollondilly.
  • Applicants must be endorsed by the school and/or sporting organisation they attend or represent.

The SWSAS Indigenous Talent Identification Day (ITID) will be held on Friday 24th July 2026
