Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS) athlete Isabella Henderson has proudly represented Australia on the international stage, returning home with an outstanding medal haul from the US Rowing International Rowing Challenge in Michigan.

Hailing from Scone, Henderson has developed through the NIAS Future Stars program while balancing the unique challenges that come with pursuing high-performance sport from a regional community. Her selection in the Australian U19B team is a testament to years of dedication, perseverance and hard work.

Competing against some of the world’s best young rowers, Henderson delivered an exceptional campaign. On Friday, she claimed silver in the Women’s Double and finished fourth in the Coxed Four before ending the regatta in spectacular fashion with gold medals in both the Women’s Quad and Mixed Eight on the final day of competition.

Australia finished the International Rowing Challenge with an impressive four gold and three silver medals, with Henderson playing a significant role in the team’s success while proudly wearing the green and gold.

For regional athletes like Isabella, the journey to elite sport often involves long hours on the road, limited access to high-performance facilities and significant personal and family commitment. Through the Regional Academies of Sport, athletes receive access to specialist coaching, strength and conditioning, sport science services, education opportunities and performance pathway support, helping bridge the gap between regional communities and national representation.

Henderson’s success is a powerful example of the impact regional sporting pathways can have in developing talented young athletes and preparing them to compete on the world stage.
