North Coast Academy of Sport discovers next wave of Indigenous sporting talent

The North Coast Academy of Sport (NCAS) opened its doors to 160 young Indigenous athletes across two days in Lismore and Coffs Harbour on the 16th and 18th of June 2026.

This event, made possible through the generous support of Underwriting Agencies Australia (UAA) was a resounding success, showcasing the depth of sporting talent across the North Coast region.

Students from schools across the region participated in a full day of testing and skills-based activities designed to uncover emerging athletic potential. The program featured a diverse selection of sports, including rugby, golf, basketball, AFL, athletics and Functional Movement Testing.

Each activity was carefully curated to assess key performance indicators such as agility, coordination, endurance and sport-specific skills.

The Indigenous Talent Identification Day is part of a broader initiative aimed at creating equitable access to high-performance sport pathways for Indigenous youth. By identifying promising athletes early, NCAS can provide tailored support to help them thrive both on and off the field.

Standout performers will be invited to participate in a complimentary 8-week strength and conditioning program and encouraged to trial for NCAS sporting programs. Athletes who successfully progress into an NCAS program will receive a scholarship, providing access to elite coaching, athlete education, and strength and conditioning services, key elements in supporting their development and preparing them for long-term sporting success.

“This program is a testament to what’s possible when community, coaches and corporate partners come together. It’s about more than sport – it’s about creating real opportunities for young people in our region.” – Sue Charles, Regional Manager, North Coast Academy of Sport

Now a key fixture in the Academy’s calendar, the Indigenous Talent Identification Day continues to grow in scale and impact. It offers a clear and structured pathway for aspiring athletes to progress through development programs and into higher levels of competition, including state and national representation.

NCAS extends its heartfelt thanks to all participating schools, families, coaches and partners who contributed to the success of the day. Their support plays a vital role in nurturing the next generation of Indigenous sporting talent.
