The 2026 Your Local Club Regional Academy Games Basketball competition will run from 17–19 April at the Tamworth Sports Dome, bringing together emerging Academy talent from across NSW.

Supported by Basketball NSW, the event showcases the next generation of players and highlights the strength of regional basketball pathways.

Families and supporters can follow all the action with live streaming available via Glory League, while scores and fixtures will be accessible through Spawtz throughout the tournament.

The event also provides a valuable development opportunity for coaches, referees and officials within the Academy system.

Tamworth Sports Dome

The Boys and Girls competition will feature 8 teams, divided into 2 pools of 4, with each team playing 3 round‑robin games within their pool. Squads are permitted to list up to 15 players, although only 12 athletes may take the court in any individual game. All participants must meet Basketball NSW’s U16 age eligibility requirements.

Timing

Games will be 4 x 10min Fully Timed Quarters, 24 second shot clock (no 14sec), 2 x time outs first half, 3 x time outs second half.
Minimum 5 min Warm Up, 2 min between quarters, 5 minute half time. No Overtime in round games, 5min Overtime period/s apply to all games.

Spirit of the Games

All games will run the full course (Fully Timed). In the event of one-sided scorelines, competitors and spectators alike are reminded that the Academy Games exists to promote development and sportsmanship amongst all. Coaches are therefore encouraged to implement a structured playing system rather than rely on a fast break offence, or simply “run up a score”. Convenors will be in attendance to observe and ensure that the Spirit of the Games is upheld.

Game Start Times

Games shall not start prior to the published start time. This is to allow suitable rest and recovery periods for Officials, Athletes and Staff alike.

Zone Defence

Whilst not preferred or encouraged, the use of Zone Defence will be permitted.

Injuries

A First Aid person will be available at the venue and should only be accessed through your Team Manager. Academy Squads are advised to bring their own supplies of ice, strapping, bandages etc. All injuries should be reported by athletes to team managers at the conclusion of games. Team officials are responsible for the transport, treatment and care of their injured athletes.

Spirit of Play

All athletes and officials are expected to observe the “spirit of sport“ requirements when participating in the Games, and adhere to the Academies’ Code of Conduct. Athletes, coaching and support staff who do not observe these fundamental requirements will not be permitted to participate further in the Games.

Officials

Persons officiating during the Academy Games are doing so as Volunteers and are committed to assisting our athletes enjoy their participation in the Games. Officials are to be treated at all times with courtesy and respect. Basketball NSW player, coach and spectator codes of conduct will be applied at this tournament. Abuse of match or tournament officials will not be tolerated at any time. Should abuse of a match official take place, the game may be stopped and the person responsible removed. The match officials may also award a bench technical foul to the team bench of the offending person, whether a coach, athlete, parent or supporter. Should any person be ejected, they shall leave the venue immediately. Following the game, it will be at the discretion of the Games Convenor whether that person shall be permitted to return for any further participation in the event.

Injuries

A First Aid person will be available at the venue and should only be accessed through your Team Manager. Academy Squads are advised to bring their own supplies of ICE, strapping, bandages etc. All injuries should be reported by athletes to team managers at the conclusion of games. (Details of player, time of incident within the game, type of (suspected) injury and contact details of the team manager are to be recorded on the reverse of the score sheet) Team officials are responsible for the transport, treatment and care of their injured athletes.

Code of Conduct

All athletes, coach and support staff, spectators, and officials are expected to observe the “spirit of sport” requirements when participating in the Games, and adhere to the relevant Basketball NSW and Regional Academies’ Code of Conduct/s. Athletes, coaching and support staff who do not observe these fundamental requirements will not be permitted to participate further in the Games.

Abuse of match or tournament officials will not be tolerated at any time. Should abuse of a match official take place, the game may be stopped by either the on-court referee, Academy Games Basketball Convenor or Referee Supervisor, and the person responsible removed.
The on-court referees will be instructed to issue a bench technical foul to the team bench of the offending person, whether a coach, athlete, parent or team supporter.

Any athlete, coach or team supporter (including parent) who is ejected or removed from a game will be unable to participate in that team’s next game; and subject to the severity of the incident, may be required to front a hearing consisting of the Academy Games Basketball Convenor, Referee Supervisor and the relevant teams Head Coach; and subject to the outcome of the hearing, have the incident referred to Basketball NSW post-event.

Match Officials

Academies are to provide at least one referee per Academy.
Participants, including spectators, players, coaches and officials are reminded to respect the referee’s decision at all times.

Score Bench

Scoretable should consist of a maximum of four (4) persons, including; 24 sec clock operator, score keeper, timekeeper and chairperson.
No other person should be seated at, behind or near the score table.

Whilst there is not a requirement that these positions are accredited, persons should be competent and familiar with the score table role and the game of Basketball. Parents are preferred over participating Academy Athletes, however are reminded that the score table is an unbiased and neutral position.

Scoring

Tamworth Sports Dome have electronic scoreboards which record the time remaining, team scores, fouls and time outs.
The score bench will record the player names, numbers, fouls and player score tally utilising the provided printed FIBA / RAS branded Basketball Scoresheet.

Team Managers are asked to complete their team’s details on the scoresheet, including playing number and at least first initial and surname prior to each game. (Blank Scoresheets for each game will be available on the clipboard at each score bench).

Score sheets will be collected by either the match referee, Academy Games Basketball Convenor or Referee Supervisor immediately after each match.

Presentations

Medallions will be presented to up to 15 persons per Academy (i.e 12 athletes and 3 staff) for Gold, (winners), Silver (runners up) and Bronze in both the Boys and Girls competition. The Winning Team in each Boys and Girls competition will also be presented with the Regional Academy Games Perpetual Trophy, which shall be returned immediately after official photos at the conclusion of the presentation. The two referees of each Grand Final will also be presented medallions at the conclusion of the Grand Final on Show court. 

A selection panel will observe athlete performance and conduct throughout the pool games and quarter finals.

A tournament All-Star Five (irrespective of playing position) will be awarded based on the performance and conduct during the Regional Academy Games, and will be presented on Showcourt prior to the Grand Final Games commencing.
